Computer Help

This page is designed to help beginner or novice users to trouble-shoot common computer problems. We will also provide links to web-pages that we feel will be helpful.

Problem 1: You push the power button and the computer comes on for a few seconds and shuts off.

Solutons: There are a few things that can cause this. Most times it is the power supply that is bad. Power supplies can be purchased for around $25 or more so don't throw the computer away.

The Power supply needs to be an exact match for the computer it is in. http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/power-supply-cross-reference.php is one web-site that will help determine the power supply needed.

Also note, that if the fan is not spinning or is spinning slowly, replacing the power supply fan or cleaning dust from the power supply may fix this problem.

The processor could be overheating. Dust is a major factor for computer failures. Open the computer case and look to see if the cooling fan located on top of the processor is working or if it is loaded with dust. Dust acts as an insulator and will cause the computer to shut down. This shut down usually takes longer than if a power supply is faulty.

The final solution may be that the motherboard has malfunctioned. If this is the case then I would suggest replacing the computer. You can purchase a new motherboard but by the time you remove all other components and pay for the motherboard, it would be easier just to buy a new updated computer.
